According to legend, Romulus founded Rome on the Palatine hill on 21 April 753 BC, after killing his twin brother Remus. The twins had been left in a basket on the Tiber and suckled by a she-wolf. The date is not a record but a calculation made by Roman scholars in the first century BC; archaeology shows that people lived on the Palatine well before it. Rome still celebrates its birthday, the Natale di Roma, every 21 April, and the she-wolf with the twins is the city's symbol.
