Qué pasó
From the eighth century BC Greek cities sent settlers across the sea to southern Italy and Sicily. Pithekoussai on Ischia and Cumae near Naples were among the first; Syracuse followed around 733 BC, and Akragas, today's Agrigento, around 580 BC. The Romans called the Greek south of the mainland Magna Graecia, Great Greece. Greek temples still stand at Paestum, Agrigento and Segesta. A form of Greek is still spoken in a few villages of Salento and Calabria, though linguists disagree whether it goes back to these colonists or to the later Byzantine centuries.
