What happened

In the eighteenth century the Russian Empire took away the Hetmanate's self-government step by step. In 1764 Catherine II abolished the office of hetman, and in June 1775 Russian troops surrounded and destroyed the Zaporizhian Sich. Some of the Cossacks left for the Ottoman lands on the Danube; others later served the empire on the Black Sea and in the Kuban. The steppe of the south was opened to settlement, and new towns and ports grew there in the following decades.
