What happened
In 1798 the first three parts of the Eneida by Ivan Kotliarevsky, from Poltava, came out in St Petersburg. It retells Virgil's Aeneid as a comic poem: the Trojans are Cossacks, and the gods feast, drink and quarrel like Ukrainian villagers. Written in the living speech of the people, it is usually called the first book in modern Ukrainian. Kotliarevsky also wrote the play Natalka Poltavka, still performed today. The whole Eneida was only published after his death.
