What happened

Vasyl Karazin, a scholar and inventor from the Kharkiv region, persuaded the emperor to allow a university in Kharkiv and collected money for it from the nobles and townspeople of the region. The university opened in 1805, one of the first in the Russian Empire's Ukrainian lands. It made Kharkiv a centre of learning, and early Ukrainian writers and scholars gathered around it. Today it bears Karazin's name and is one of the oldest universities in Ukraine.
