What happened
From the end of the 1960s to the early 1980s, the anni di piombo or years of lead, far-left and far-right terrorists killed hundreds of people. On 16 March 1978 the Red Brigades kidnapped Aldo Moro, a former prime minister and president of the Christian Democrats, in Via Fani in Rome, killing the five men of his escort. The government refused to negotiate. On 9 May, almost two months later, his body was found in a car in Via Caetani, in the centre of Rome. Much about the case is still argued over.
