What happened
On 17 February 1992 Milan magistrates arrested Mario Chiesa, the Socialist head of a city care home, as he took a bribe. The investigation, Mani pulite, uncovered a system of kickbacks paying for the parties, Tangentopoli, and within two years the parties that had governed since the war had collapsed. In the same year the Sicilian mafia murdered the judges Giovanni Falcone, with his wife and three bodyguards, at Capaci on 23 May, and Paolo Borsellino, with five bodyguards, in Via D'Amelio on 19 July. The massacres shocked the country and hardened the fight against the mafia.
