What happened
In the late 1950s and early 1960s Italy changed faster than at any time in its history. Industry boomed in the north-western triangle of Milan, Turin and Genoa, and millions of people moved there from the South and the countryside. Families bought their first fridge, television and Fiat 500, and the Vespa carried a generation. Italy was a founding member of the European Economic Community, set up by the Treaties of Rome in 1957. The boom also brought overcrowded cities, and the gap between North and South remained.
