What happened

The revolution began with a sailors' revolt in Kiel on 3 November 1918 and reached the big cities within days. On 9 November in Berlin, Chancellor Max von Baden announced that Emperor Wilhelm II had abdicated, before Wilhelm had agreed to it. Around midday the Social Democrat Philipp Scheidemann called out 'Long live the German Republic!' from a window of the Reichstag; a few hours later the communist Karl Liebknecht proclaimed a 'free socialist republic' at the palace. Wilhelm went into exile in the Netherlands the next day. 9 November returned in German history more than once: in 1923, 1938 and 1989.
