What happened
German women won the vote on 12 November 1918 and used it nationally for the first time on 19 January 1919, when the National Assembly was elected. Because Berlin was unsafe after the Spartacist uprising, the assembly met in the theatre of the small city of Weimar, which gave the republic its name. Its constitution, adopted in August 1919, made Germany a democracy with basic rights, and black, red and gold became the national colours. Women in Switzerland, by comparison, waited until 1971 for the vote at federal level, and in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden until 1990.
