What happened
After the murder of the Austrian heir to the throne in Sarajevo, Germany backed Austria-Hungary and declared war on Russia on 1 August 1914 and on France two days later. Its march through neutral Belgium brought Britain into the war. The quick victory Germans expected turned into four years of trench warfare. About two million German soldiers died, and at home the British blockade and poor harvests brought hunger, above all in the 'turnip winter' of 1916–17. By the autumn of 1918 the army could fight no longer, and the armistice was signed on 11 November. How much of the blame for the war Germany bears is still debated by historians.
