What happened
Nine days after Hitler and Stalin had secretly agreed to divide Eastern Europe between them, the German army invaded Poland at dawn on 1 September 1939, using as a pretext a 'Polish attack' on the Gleiwitz radio station that the SS had staged. Britain and France declared war on 3 September. The Second World War, started by Nazi Germany, became a war of conquest and annihilation, above all in Eastern Europe, where millions of civilians and prisoners of war were deliberately killed. Tens of millions of people had died by the time Germany surrendered in May 1945.
