What happened
On the night of 9 to 10 November 1938, organised by the Nazi leadership, SA and SS men and their followers attacked Jews across Germany and Austria. About 1,400 synagogues and prayer rooms were destroyed, Jewish shops and homes were wrecked, and at least 30,000 Jewish men were taken to concentration camps. The Nazis' own count was 91 dead; historians estimate that 1,000 or more died, counting suicides and deaths in the camps. The Nazis called it 'Reichskristallnacht', a name many Germans now avoid because it makes the violence sound like broken glass. Today small brass Stolpersteine in the pavement recall victims of Nazi persecution outside their homes.
