What happened
On 30 January 1933 President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler chancellor, urged on by conservatives who believed they could control him. Within months the Nazis had destroyed the democracy: after the Reichstag fire in February an emergency decree suspended basic rights, and in March the Enabling Act, passed against the votes of the Social Democrats, let the government make laws without parliament. Opponents were beaten, locked up in the first concentration camps or driven abroad, and Jews were pushed out of public life. On 10 May students burned the books of Jewish, left-wing and other 'un-German' writers in Berlin and many other university towns.
