What happened
On 20 January 1942, in a villa by the Wannsee lake in Berlin, Reinhard Heydrich met senior officials to coordinate the murder of Europe's Jews, which the Nazis called the 'final solution'. The killing had already begun: mass shootings had followed the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, so many historians see the meeting less as the decision than as its organisation. About six million Jews were murdered, many in extermination camps such as Auschwitz, and several hundred thousand Sinti and Roma were killed as well. Auschwitz was liberated on 27 January 1945, since 1996 Germany's day of remembrance for the victims of National Socialism.
