What happened
The White Rose was a small circle of students and a professor in Munich who wrote and spread six leaflets against the Nazi regime and its crimes in 1942 and 1943. On 18 February 1943 Hans and Sophie Scholl scattered leaflets in the atrium of Munich University; the caretaker held them until the Gestapo arrived. Four days later the People's Court sentenced them and their friend Christoph Probst to death, and they were executed the same day. Alexander Schmorell, Willi Graf and Professor Kurt Huber were executed later that year. Today schools, streets and the square outside the university bear their names.
