What happened
Hitler killed himself in Berlin on 30 April 1945. The Wehrmacht's unconditional surrender, signed at Reims on 7 May and again in Berlin-Karlshorst in the night of 8 to 9 May, took effect at 23:01 on 8 May. Germany's cities lay in ruins, and millions of Germans were fleeing or being expelled from the east. The victors divided the country into four occupation zones and Berlin into four sectors. For a long time many Germans remembered 8 May as a defeat. In 1985 President Richard von Weizsäcker called it a day of liberation from the Nazi tyranny, a speech that changed how the day is remembered.
