What happened

Otto I, crowned king of the East Franks in Aachen in 936, defeated the Hungarians on the Lechfeld near Augsburg in 955. In 962 Pope John XII crowned him emperor in Rome. From then on the German kings claimed the title of Roman emperor. Most historians date the empire that lasted until 1806 from this coronation, though some see its roots in Charlemagne's. Only later did it get its full name: 'Holy' was added in the twelfth century, 'of the German Nation' in the fifteenth. It was never a nation state, but a patchwork of hundreds of principalities, church lands and free cities under one emperor.
