What happened
On Christmas Day 800 Pope Leo III crowned the Frankish king Charles emperor in St Peter's in Rome. His empire reached from northern Spain to the Elbe, and in his later years he ruled it mostly from Aachen, where he loved to swim in the warm springs. According to his biographer Einhard, he tried to learn to write late in life, without much success. He died in Aachen in 814 and is buried in its cathedral, the first German site on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Germans call him Karl der Große, the French Charlemagne, and both claim him. In 843 his grandsons divided the empire, a first step towards the later France and Germany.
