What happened

In the year 9, Germanic warriors led by Arminius, a prince of the Cherusci who had served as a Roman officer, trapped three Roman legions under Publius Quinctilius Varus and destroyed them over several days. Varus took his own life. Within a few years Rome gave up trying to conquer the land up to the Elbe, and the Rhine, later with the Limes wall, marked the edge of its empire for centuries. Where the battle was fought is still debated: finds at Kalkriese near Osnabrück, first made by a British officer in 1987, point there, but not every historian is convinced. In the nineteenth century Arminius became 'Hermann', a national hero with a giant monument near Detmold.
