What happened

The Hanse began in the twelfth century as an association of German merchants trading abroad and grew into a league of towns. In 1356 representatives of almost all the Hanseatic towns met in Lübeck for the first general Hansetag. At its height about 70 towns formed the core, with some 130 more loosely attached, from Cologne to the eastern Baltic. Its merchants kept great trading posts in London, Bruges, Bergen and Novgorod, and traded salt, herring, stockfish, grain, wax and beer. The last Hansetag met in 1669. Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck still call themselves Hanseatic cities, which is why Hamburg's number plates begin with HH.
