Božena Němcová published Babička, The Grandmother, in 1855: a year in the life of a country grandmother and the children she brings up, in a valley in east Bohemia. It became the best-loved Czech novel of the nineteenth century and is still widely read in schools. Němcová herself appears on the 500-crown banknote.
