What happened

The National Theatre on the Vltava was paid for largely by public collections. It opened in June 1881 and burned down that August, weeks later. The nation collected the money again in a few weeks, and the theatre reopened on 18 November 1883. Over the stage is the motto Národ sobě — the nation to itself.

Say it

Nad jevištěm Národního divadla je nápis Národ sobě.

Above the stage of the National Theatre is the inscription Národ sobě.
