What happened
By 1800 Czech was spoken mostly in villages; the educated wrote in German. A generation of scholars set out to change that. Josef Dobrovský described the grammar, Josef Jungmann published a five-volume Czech–German dictionary (1834–1839) and revived old words, and František Palacký wrote the history of the nation. Within a few decades Czech was again a language of science, literature and politics.
Say it
Obrozenci chtěli, aby se česky zase psalo i mluvilo ve městech.
The revivalists wanted Czech to be written and spoken in the cities again.
