Julius Caesar conquered Gaul, crossed the Rubicon with his army in January 49 BC — the start of a civil war — and won it. Early in 44 BC he was made dictator for life. More than sixty conspirators, led by Brutus and Cassius, feared he would make himself king, and on the Ides of March, 15 March 44 BC, they stabbed him to death in the Curia of Pompey in Rome. Instead of saving the Republic, the murder led to new civil wars, which ended with Caesar's adopted son Octavian in sole power.
