On 2 and 3 June 1946 Italians voted in a referendum on monarchy or republic — women voting in a national election for the first time — and the Republic won with about 54 percent. King Umberto II left the country on 13 June. On the same days they elected an assembly to write a constitution, which came into force on 1 January 1948 and begins: Italy is a democratic Republic, founded on work. 2 June is the Festa della Repubblica.
