In Padua on 7 January 1610 Galileo Galilei turned a telescope he had improved himself towards Jupiter and saw three small 'stars' beside it; a few nights later there were four, and they moved with the planet: moons. He published this in The Starry Messenger in March 1610. His defence of Copernicus's idea that the Earth moves round the Sun brought him before the Roman Inquisition, which in 1633 forced him to abjure and kept him under house arrest near Florence until his death in 1642. In 1992 Pope John Paul II acknowledged that the Church had been wrong.
