Qué pasó
Italy entered the Second World War beside Hitler in June 1940 and suffered defeat after defeat. After the Allies landed in Sicily, the Fascist Grand Council voted against Mussolini on the night of 24–25 July 1943 and the king had him arrested. On 8 September an armistice with the Allies was announced; the king and government fled south, leaving the army without orders. Germany occupied the centre and north, and Mussolini, freed by German paratroopers, was put at the head of a puppet state, the Italian Social Republic. The armed Resistance began.
