In AD 79 Vesuvius erupted and buried Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae under ash, stones and hot gas. Pliny the Younger watched from across the bay and later described the cloud, shaped like a pine tree, in two letters to the historian Tacitus; his uncle, Pliny the Elder, died at Stabiae trying to rescue people. The date long given was 24 August, from the manuscripts of those letters, but a charcoal inscription found at Pompeii in 2018, dated mid-October, has convinced most scholars that the eruption came in the autumn, probably on 24 October. Excavations began in the eighteenth century and still go on.
