In 568 the Lombards, a Germanic people led by King Alboin, came into Italy through Friuli and took much of the peninsula, later with Pavia as their capital. The Byzantines kept Ravenna, Rome, Naples, the far south and the islands, and Italy stayed divided for the next thirteen centuries. The Lombards gave their name to Lombardy and everyday words to Italian, such as guancia, cheek, and panca, bench. Queen Theodelinda founded the church that became Monza cathedral, which keeps the Iron Crown — whose 'iron' ring turned out, in 1993, to be silver. Charlemagne ended their kingdom in 774.
