Sicily was ruled by the French king Charles of Anjou, whose officials and soldiers were hated. On Easter Monday, 30 March 1282, at the hour of vespers outside the church of Santo Spirito in Palermo, a French soldier insulted a Sicilian woman and was killed; the revolt spread across the island within weeks. Legend says the rebels found the French out by making them say ciciri, chickpeas. The Sicilians offered the crown to Peter III of Aragon, and the war that followed lasted twenty years.
