What happened
On 6 November 1960 the first line of the Kyiv metro opened, with five stations: the first metro in Ukraine. Because the city stands on steep hills above the Dnipro, some stations lie very deep; Arsenalna, over a hundred metres down, is often called the deepest in the world. The line soon crossed the river on the Metro Bridge. Today the metro has three lines and carries hundreds of millions of passengers a year, and Kharkiv and Dnipro have metros too.
