What happened
In the night of 26 April 1986 reactor number four of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant exploded during a test, and a cloud of radioactive material spread over Ukraine, Belarus and much of Europe. The next day almost fifty thousand people were evacuated from the town of Prypiat, told it would be for three days; they never came back. Hundreds of thousands of liquidators worked to contain the disaster. A thirty-kilometre exclusion zone still surrounds the plant, where wild animals now roam.
