What happened
In 1932 and 1933 a man-made famine, the Holodomor, killed millions of people in Soviet Ukraine. It followed the forced collectivisation of farms and grain requisitions that took food from the villages. Ukraine recognised it as a genocide of the Ukrainian people by law in 2006. Ukraine remembers the victims every year on the fourth Saturday of November, when people light candles in their windows.
