What happened

From 1919 to 1934 Kharkiv was the capital of Soviet Ukraine. On its huge new square the state built Derzhprom, the House of State Industry, from 1925 to 1928: a group of concrete towers joined by bridges, one of the first high-rise buildings in the Soviet Union and a landmark of constructivist architecture. In the 1920s Kharkiv was also the centre of a burst of new Ukrainian writing, theatre and art. In 1934 the capital moved to Kyiv.
