What happened

Prince Volodymyr, Olha's grandson, ruled Kyiv from about 980. He first honoured the old gods, such as Perun, then chose the Christianity of Byzantium and married Anna, the sister of Emperor Basil II. The traditional date for the baptism of the people of Kyiv is 988; the chronicle puts it in the Dnipro, some historians in its tributary the Pochaina. With the new faith came churches, books in Church Slavonic and closer ties with Byzantium. Ukraine keeps a state day for the Christianisation of Kyiv-Rus'.
