What happened
In November 1918, as Austria-Hungary fell apart, the West Ukrainian People's Republic was proclaimed in Lviv. On 22 January 1919, on Sofia Square in Kyiv, the two republics, Kyiv's and Lviv's, proclaimed their union. The union did not last: both republics lost their wars in the following years. But the day was remembered, and on 21 January 1990 hundreds of thousands of people joined hands in a human chain from Kyiv to Lviv. 22 January is now Ukraine's Day of Unity.
