In the summer of 2012 Ukraine and Poland jointly hosted the European football championship, the first held in either country. In Ukraine matches were played in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk and Lviv, and new stadiums, airport terminals and roads were built for it. Hundreds of thousands of fans came from across Europe. The final was played at the Olympic Stadium in Kyiv on 1 July 2012, where Spain beat Italy four goals to nil.
