What happened

On 28 June 1996, after a night-long session, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Constitution of Ukraine, and 28 June became Constitution Day. In September of the same year the hryvnia replaced the temporary coupons of the early 1990s. Its name comes from a unit of value in Kyivan Rus', and its notes carry the faces of Ukraine's history: Volodymyr the Great, Yaroslav the Wise, Khmelnytsky, Mazepa, Franko, Shevchenko, Lesia Ukrainka and others.
