What happened
Ivan Mazepa, hetman from 1687, paid for churches and schools and served Tsar Peter I for twenty years. In 1708 he went over to King Charles XII of Sweden, hoping to free the Hetmanate from the tsar. In November 1708 the tsar's army destroyed his capital, Baturyn. On 8 July 1709 (27 June in the old calendar) Peter defeated the Swedes and Mazepa's Cossacks near Poltava. Mazepa fled to Ottoman Bender, where he died the same year; the Hetmanate lost more and more of its rights.
