What happened
In 1891 two men from the village of Nebyliv in Galicia, then part of Austria-Hungary, Ivan Pylypiw and Vasyl Eleniak, travelled to Canada. They were the first of a great wave: tens of thousands of Ukrainian peasants followed them to the prairies of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, where they farmed land that had never been ploughed. Today over a million Canadians have Ukrainian roots, and Ukrainian words, churches and varenyky are part of life on the prairies.
