What happened
Roman tradition says the city was ruled by seven kings, the last of them from the Etruscan family of the Tarquins. In 509 BC, by the traditional date, the Romans drove out Tarquin the Proud and replaced the king with two magistrates elected every year, later called consuls, so that no single man could hold power for long. Over the next centuries the Republic, governed by its magistrates, the Senate and the assemblies of the people, conquered first Italy and then the Mediterranean. Historians treat the early dates and names as tradition rather than record.
