What happened

In the Second Punic War, Carthage's general Hannibal marched from Spain over the Pyrenees and the Alps into Italy in 218 BC, with his army and thirty-seven war elephants, most of which soon died. He destroyed Roman armies at Lake Trasimene in 217 BC and at Cannae in 216 BC, and stayed in Italy for fifteen years without taking Rome. Recalled to Africa, he was beaten by Scipio at Zama in 202 BC, and Carthage made peace the following year. Rome came out of the war as the strongest power in the western Mediterranean.
