What happened
On the night of 5–6 May 1860 Giuseppe Garibaldi sailed from Quarto, near Genoa, with about a thousand volunteers in red shirts on two steamships, and on 11 May landed at Marsala in Sicily. With Sicilian rebels joining them, they beat the Bourbon army at Calatafimi, took Palermo and crossed to the mainland, entering Naples in September. On 26 October Garibaldi met King Victor Emmanuel II near Teano and handed over the conquered south, which plebiscites had just voted to join the new kingdom.
