Where: Italy
What happened
Rome was still ruled by the pope, protected by a French garrison. When France went to war with Prussia in the summer of 1870 the French left, and on 20 September Italian troops opened a breach in the city walls near Porta Pia and entered Rome. A plebiscite joined the city to Italy, and in 1871 it became the capital. Pope Pius IX refused to accept it and called himself a prisoner in the Vatican; the quarrel was only settled by the Lateran Pacts of 1929.
