What happened

Italy went to war against Austria-Hungary on 24 May 1915, after the secret Treaty of London promised it Trento, Trieste and more. Years of slaughter followed on the Isonzo and in the Alps. In October 1917 the front broke at Caporetto, still an Italian word for disaster, and the army fell back to the Piave, where it held. The victory at Vittorio Veneto was followed by the armistice that took effect on 4 November 1918. About 650,000 Italian soldiers died.
