What happened
On 28 October 1922 thousands of armed Fascist squads moved on Rome. The government asked King Victor Emmanuel III to declare a state of siege, and the king refused to sign it. On 30 October he asked Benito Mussolini, who had waited in Milan and came down by night train, to form a government. In the next few years Mussolini turned it into a dictatorship: opposition parties and a free press were abolished, and in 1938 the regime passed racial laws against Italy's Jews.
