What happened
In 476 Odoacer, a Germanic general, deposed the boy emperor Romulus Augustulus in Ravenna and sent the imperial insignia to Constantinople, saying the West no longer needed an emperor of its own. Romulus was sent to live on a pension in Naples. Historians use 476 as the end of the Western Roman Empire and the beginning of the Middle Ages, though at the time it looked less like a fall than a change of management: the eastern empire went on for almost a thousand years more.
