What happened

The Viceroyalty of Peru was set up in 1542, after the civil wars among the conquerors, and its first viceroy, Blasco Núñez Vela, arrived in 1544 to enforce the New Laws and died in the revolt against them. Governed from Lima, it at first covered almost all of Spanish South America. Viceroy Francisco de Toledo (1569–81) organised the mita labour draft that sent Andean villagers to the silver mines of Potosí, the richest in the world around 1600. In the eighteenth century New Granada and the Río de la Plata were cut away from it, and in 1780 the rebellion of Túpac Amaru II shook the Andes.
