What happened
The Bourbons created a third viceroyalty in 1717 for the northern part of South America, with its capital at Santa Fe de Bogotá, to control contraband and defend the Caribbean coast. It was suppressed in 1723 and re-established in 1739, and lasted until the independence movements. Its territory covered parts of today's Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama, with the fortified port of Cartagena de Indias as its gateway to the Atlantic.
